The Lowe’s Foundation board members had aligned on transforming from local to national, a single focus area and committing to a bold goal. The next step was to build the strategic framework with a bold outcome-driven goal, new grant program, revised operational structure and multi-stakeholder engagement approach.
Approach
Aligning on Lowe’s Foundation strategic framework
Building on the discovery phase insights and workshop takeaways (insights-driven approach) we developed a strategic framework for the Foundation, including a five-year, $50M commitment to skilled trades.
In addition to the commitment, we built an ambitious, but achievable, outcome-driven model and outlined operational needs for the Foundation to meet the commitment.
Adopting new operational structure
- We worked with the core team and board members to build a charter for the Foundation, including a new working board operational model with a core team of FTEs to support.
- We developed board roles & responsibilities, a forward-looking timeline of board member commitments and provided ongoing counsel to the client team as the foundational core team roles were recruited and hired.
Engaging stakeholders
- We developed multi-stakeholder engagement plans for the Lowe’s Foundation, including advocates, skilled trades professionals, employees, vendors, grantees, future tradespeople and general consumers.
- We were also retained to help implement stakeholder engagement plans, including meeting with key stakeholders, participating in internal roadshows, media engagement, marketing materials development, social media channel development, advocacy events and grantee onboarding.

- Lowe’s Foundation charter, including new working board operational model
- Strategic framework anchored around a single five-year commitment in skilled trades
- Outcome-driven model for the commitment to prepare 50,000 new individuals for careers in the skilled trades
